How asbestos damages the lungs

The danger begins when asbestos fibers become airborne and someone inhales them. Damage, removal, or renovation can release fibers that intact material would otherwise contain. The National Cancer Institute says inhaled fibers can remain in the lungs.

The body's reaction may cause lasting inflammation and scar tissue, interfering with breathing and contributing to serious disease. This mechanism establishes a genuine health risk, but it cannot predict an individual outcome. An exposure history alone does not show whether a particular person will develop an asbestos-related condition.

Which diseases can follow exposure?

Asbestos exposure can cause cancerous and noncancerous diseases. WHO identifies mesothelioma—a cancer associated with tissue lining certain organs—along with cancers of the lung, larynx, and ovaries. Who faces the greatest risk?

The National Cancer Institute identifies regularly exposed workers as the people most likely to become ill. Higher-risk occupations include construction, demolition, insulation, shipbuilding, mining, firefighting, and asbestos removal. Household exposure and substantial environmental exposure can also matter. The evidence therefore does not limit concern to people who directly handled asbestos at work.

Smoking creates an additional danger. WHO says tobacco smoking combined with asbestos exposure substantially increases lung-cancer risk, with heavier smoking increasing that risk further. WHO estimates that occupational asbestos exposure causes more than 200,000 deaths worldwide each year. However, its estimate of how widely construction workers are exposed relies on studies judged to be low quality and needing more research. That limitation affects estimates of prevalence, not asbestos's established carcinogenicity.

When asbestos in a building becomes hazardous

The presence of asbestos does not automatically mean fibers are entering the air. The Environmental Protection Agency says intact, undisturbed material is unlikely to pose a health risk.

Damage and renovation change the calculation because they can make fibers airborne. The EPA advises managing asbestos in place and keeping it in good repair. If material may contain asbestos:.

  • Pause work that could cut, drill, sand, break, or remove it.
  • Avoid disturbing the area while seeking qualified guidance.
  • Record where the material is located and what activity may have damaged it.
  • Do not assume removal is necessary when the material remains intact.

What to document after possible exposure

A medical source can explain general hazards, but it cannot establish who caused a particular exposure or whether someone qualifies for compensation. Those questions require facts connecting the person, location, material, timing, and diagnosed condition.
