A master complaint sets out shared allegations for many youth-harm claims in one filing. It does not replace individual lawsuits, state-court cases, or proof of personal injury. A master complaint is a common tool in coordinated litigation. It lets lawyers plead common facts once, then connect each person's case to those facts.

What is the social media master complaint?
Personal-injury plaintiffs filed a master complaint for nearly 100 adolescents, according to Bloomberg Law's 2023 report on the youth addiction filing. It names Meta, Google, ByteDance, and Snap. It alleges addictive product design fueled youth mental-health harm, dangerous challenges, and exploitation. The federal youth-harm suits were consolidated for coordinated pretrial proceedings, according to the U.S. Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation's federal transfer order. The master complaint does not file anyone's case for them. Each member plaintiff must still file an individual short-form complaint, as shown by the short-form complaint filed in March 2025 in the Northern District of California.

A 2026 Chambers practice guide from Robbins Geller Rudman & Dowd reports that design-defect and failure-to-warn claims over age verification, parental controls, and usage limits are not categorically barred by Section 230 or the First Amendment. Bellwether cases test representative disputes and may guide settlement talks.
They do not decide every case. The first school-district bellwether, brought by a Kentucky county school district, settled with Meta, Snap, TikTok, and YouTube before trial on undisclosed terms, according to Seeger Weiss. Families should not read a bellwether settlement as a payment schedule. Results turn on the facts proved in each case. Liability, causation, and damages still matter.
What cases fall outside the federal master complaint?
Parallel state litigation continues separately. California individual and school-district suits proceed as coordinated proceeding JCCP 5255 in Los Angeles Superior Court, according to Beasley Allen.
